1.
What Is A Domain Name?
Your
domain name is your company's web site address on the Internet. It
is used for various aspects of Internet addressing, most notably your
email address and web site address, eg.
sales@thephonenumbershop.co.uk
and
www.thephonenumbershop.co.uk.
There is only one unique domain name provided to each registrant -
No one else will share your domain name.
For instance our domain names are:
www.uksecurewebhosting.co.uk
www.uksecurewebhosting.com
www.uksecurewebhosting.net
2.
Who Needs a Domain Name?
Unless you are using email and putting up a web site for personal
or leisure reasons, a domain name should be considered a must
for
all companies. This will become a way for people to locate you on
the Internet.
The sooner
you register a domain name suitable for your company, the more likely
your first choice name will be available.
If your
company name is Sandelwood Furniture and next week the company Sandelwood
Shoes registers the domain names of:
sandelwood.com
and sandelwood.co.uk
- For
themselves, those names will likely be unavailable to you forever.
3. What Are The Benefits Of A Domain Name?
An appropriate company domain name presents a more professional image
to online users and provides you with better name recognition - If
you are using the name of your Internet Service Provider to comprise
your web site and email address, you run the risk of having to involuntarily
change names due to the sale of your ISP's company to a larger provider.
This is not an uncommon occurrence. Consider the inconvenience, expense
and lost customer traffic if you changed your company's physical address.
Having
your own domain name allows you more flexibility to change service
providers or to setup your own in-house server if it becomes desirable.
